Raul C. Pagdanganan: how an accountant found success in the medical field

The study of Accountancy was first established in the Philippines through the Accountancy Act of 1923 exactly 100 years ago. To commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime milestone, the Professional Regulatory Board of Accountancy (BOA) awarded 100 of the most excellent certified public accountants (CPA) who have shown untarnished integrity and reputation and have greatly contributed to the advancement of the accountancy profession in the country in the last 100 years.

Among the awardees was Mr. Raul C. Pagdanganan, President and CEO of Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) - a hospital. “A medical institution is certainly not the first place you would expect a certified public accountant to be leading,” Pagdanganan said. “But I firmly believe it was my calling.”

Pagdanganan had wanted to be a doctor, which was why he enrolled in the Bachelor of Zoology program at the University of the Philippines (UP). He ended up shifting to the College of Business Administration instead, and finished his Business Administration and Accountancy degree in 1981, passing the board exam as part of the top 20 successful takers.

CSMC pushes for team approach to tumor management this Brain Tumor Awareness Month

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the country, third only to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. For less common cancers like brain cancer, however, there may not be enough awareness among Filipinos to prevent its onset, or resources to help those afflicted.

“One common misconception is that frequent headaches must mean a brain tumor; that’s often not the case,” said Dr. Michael Louis Gimenez, resident neurosurgeon and Chairman of the Brain and Spine Institute at Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC). “It’s possible, but there are a combination of symptoms that more accurately distinguish a possible brain tumor.”

NGCP empowers communities through PhP2.5B CSR projects

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the country’s transmission system operator, continues the work of empowering communities through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects, benefiting 13,722 residents in various host provinces since it began officially operating in 2009.

For 2023, several social infrastructure projects are lined up, starting with classroom buildings whose locations will be finalized in coordination with the Department of Education.

“Social responsibility is an essential component of NGCP’s corporate culture, and this is the reason why we established our Corporate Initiatives and Advocacies Division or CIAD – our CSR arm – to respond to the development needs of our partner communities through projects that help improve the residents’ quality of life, build up their capabilities and protect the environment, as well,” Ada Lopez, head of NGCP’s Corporate Initiatives and Advocacies Division, explained.
